The air conditioning hummed, a monotonous drone that matched the sluggish beat of Leo's heart. He leaned against the wall, trying to avoid contact. The pastel colors of the bridesmaids' dresses swam before his eyes, blurring with the glittering decorations. He’d barely touched his plate.

Then, a familiar silhouette emerged from the crowd, making his stomach clench. It was Chloe. Her eyes met his, and a polite, almost pitying, smile stretched across her lips.

He braced himself. "Chloe," he said, the word a dry whisper. He felt a throbbing ache behind his eyes, a dull pressure that wouldn't let up.
